BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE VATICAN CITY

At one time where many pilgrims and tourist visit every day, was an uninhabited area across the Tiber River from Rome. Agrippina the Elder during the 1 century drained the hill and created her gardens in this uninhabited place. Emperor Caligula started the building of a circus, which was later finished by Nero, known as the Circus of Nero.

The obelisk that still stands in Vatican City today was once home in Heliopolis and brought here by Caligula as an adornment for his circus. This circus was the place of many cruel crucifixions including that of Saint Peter in which he was crucified upside down.

Finally, in the last half of the 4 century the Basilica of Saint Peter was constructed built atop the original church, which is now the home to tombs of various popes including what is believed to be the tomb of Saint Peter.

The palace nearby was built during the 5 century during the pontificate of Pope Symmachus. From that time until the present, many of the buildings and items held within have been collected and built.

The entire area of Vatican City is home to many wonderful works of art, historical documents dating back to early Egyptians, sculptures, and even mummies. Visitors today can stroll through the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, Saint Peters Basilica, and the Vatican Gardens.
